Our History
Chabot College Radio began in 1975 as KCC, later remembered as KCC-AM. This 25-watt carrier-current station transmitted an AM signal through the campus electrical system and reportedly reached more than 17,000 students. KCC also presented college news, cultural events, and Chabot sports through the local cable system’s public-access Channel 3.
The college district later established a licensed educational FM station. The FCC granted a construction permit for 89.9 MHz in August 1980 and assigned the call letters KCRH “Chabot Radio Hayward” in January 1981 and KCRH made its first broadcast on April 10, 1981.
More than five decades after Chabot College Radio began, KCRH continues to give students a place to learn, create, experiment, and be heard.
